Autumn Term - Out of Darkness
What are we learning?
Out of Darkness
This term we are learning about the Great War. We will be finding out what life was like in Britain in 1914 and the events leading up to the outbreak of the war. We will be drawing a timeline of the major events which shaped the war and discussing how it must have felt to be a young soldier or a new wife left at home.
Parent Craft Session
Thank you to those of you who came along to our first Parent Craft Session on Wednesday. We were delighted with the huge turn out; it was lovely to get to meet so many of you. Hopefully you enjoyed the activities as much as the children. The work produced was amazing and will soon be on display in our classroom galleries!
In addition to the weekly spelling list, children also have personal spelling cards. These cards record words the children find tricky to spell. There are usually no more than 5 'live' spellings on the card for the children to be working on. Against each word, there are 10 boxes; each time the word is spelled correctly, the box is ticked. Hopefully, once the word has been spelled correctly 10 times, it will be embedded in the child's working memory. There should be a decent gap (ideally a few hours or even a day) between testing these spellings to ensure they are not just memorised in the short term. Please help us to help your child by testing these words at home.
For some children, these might be the only spellings they have each week so we don't overload them with new words while they are learning.
Educational Visit to Duxford
On Wednesday 17th October, visited the Imperial War Museum at Duxford (https://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford)
This was a great opportunity for us to deepen our understanding about World War I. The children enjoyed visiting all the displays - especially looking at the wide selection of old aeroplanes.
Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo
we ahve almost finished our class novel - Private Peaceful.
We really enjoyed finding out about the life of Private Tommo Peaceful before he was sent to the Battlefields of Flanders, and then finding out about the horrors of the WWl trenches through the eyes of a young soldier'
We will shortly be starting our next novel - also by
